Modernising inventory management for Danish rail operator

DSB (Danish State Railways) is the national railway operator of Denmark. It connects major cities and regional destinations, serving millions of passengers each year.

As a central part of Denmark’s public transport system, DSB continuously invests in improving passenger experience, operational efficiency and sustainability. With a modern fleet and evolving customer expectations, DSB wanted a software platform capable of supporting its long-term commercial and operational goals.

The Challenge: Replacing a legacy inventory system

DSB selected S3 Passenger as the solution to replace its legacy inventory management system, used for all mainline services.

DSB wanted to modernise this critical component in order to improve the overall passenger experience while making better use of available train capacity. They also needed a system capable of supporting longer booking horizons and greater flexibility in adapting to timetable changes - allowing ticket sales to open earlier, while at the same time accommodating later operational updates.

Optimizing capacity and passenger experience

With S3 Passenger, DSB gains advanced capabilities for inventory management, reservations and dynamic pricing.

The platform’s seating algorithms allow DSB to allocate and sell available capacity more efficiently, particularly during peak hours, while making better use of off-peak capacity.

Another key improvement is the ability to extend the booking horizon. With this added flexibility of S3 Passenger, DSB can open ticket sales much earlier while still adjusting to timetable updates through dynamic rebooking as needed.

Improving communication with passengers is also an important objective - S3 Passenger enables more direct and timely communication when changes occur during a passenger’s journey.

Supporting fleet renewal and commercial flexibility

DSB is currently investing in its train fleet, replacing ageing rolling stock with modern electric trains, including new Vectron locomotives from Siemens Mobility.

The new fleet requires greater flexibility when managing seat availability and capacity across services. S3 Passenger has the needed capabilities to manage both the logical and physical availability of seats and to support evolving commercial strategies.

DSB will also be able to introduce new commercial concepts such as dynamic zones within trains, as well as more flexible off-peak fares. S3 Passenger also enables DSB to better monitor demand patterns and adapt its offerings accordingly.

A long-term partnership

The collaboration between DSB and Sqills is a long-term partnership. The agreement includes a 12-year contract, with the possibility for another 12 years.

For DSB, adopting S3 Passenger represents an important step toward modernising its commercial platform and delivering high-quality rail services across Denmark.

For Sqills, the partnership with DSB further strengthens its presence in Northern Europe and demonstrates the maturity of S3 Passenger as a suitable solution for modern rail operations.

We are excited about partnering with Sqills because we want to continue to provide the best possible service for our passengers while ensuring that we modernise our offer. Our inventory management system is at the heart of the DSB system landscape, making it a critical part of our commercial platform.
