Amtrak is the main passenger rail operator in the United States. It connects more than 500 destinations across 46 states and three Canadian provinces and manages a network spanning over 34,000 km of track.

Amtrak is an iconic rail operator with a broad range of services: from high-speed routes in the Northeast Corridor to Long-Distance routes with sleeper cars and its unique Auto Train service.

The Challenge: Replacing a 40-year-old system

For the last 40 years, Amtrak has relied on the "Arrow" reservation system. But to remain competitive, Amtrak needed to replace this legacy platform, in order to get the flexibility needed for today's digital first-world and to meet the modern traveler's expectations.

Amtrak wanted a commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) software solution that could offer a strong and reliable digital foundation: a system capable of handling inventory management, reservations, ticketing and pricing optimization, while also offering the agility required to adapt to changing market demands.

A diverse and complex network

In 2023 Amtrak selected S3 Passenger as its next-generation sales and distribution platform. Moving to a cloud-based, flexible and highly scalable solution was a key milestone in the evolution of Amtrak’s operations.

What makes this project unique is the broad range of services that S3 Passenger must support: high-frequency commuter services, unreserved tickets, complex long-distance routes or specialized transport (like the Auto Train).

By adopting S3 Passenger, Amtrak will be able to modernize its entire sales and distribution ecosystem. With a scalable and cloud-based platform, Amtrak ensures it can handle high transactional volumes while also providing a seamless experience for the North American passengers.
